Summary:
A leading University fire safety engineering group has developed modelling tools to solve some of the world's toughest fire and safety engineering problems. Fire simulation software, and human behaviour and evacuation simulation tools can be coupled to solve complex engineering problems associated with people-people, people-fire and people-structure interactions. Licensing/joint venture interactions sought with industry/researchers working in rail - manufacturers, operators and related areas.
Details:
The group is a world leader in Computational Fire Engineering. From the Airbus A380 superjumbo, to the new aircraft carrier for the Royal Navy; from the Sydney and Beijing Olympics to the World Trade Center evacuation, the group and their advanced fire and evacuation/pedestrian dynamics modelling tools have solved some of the world’s toughest fire and safety engineering problems.
The group's unique software can be used for both evacuation simulation and pedestrian dynamics/circulation analysis. The software has been developed to meet the challenging demands of performance based safety codes. Based on a highly sophisticated set of sub models, it shatters the mould of traditional engineering analysis to produce realistic people-people, people-fire and people-structure interactions. As a result, the engineer can test more designs in less time to reach the optimal solution, free of the high cost and potential danger associated with human evacuation trials. The unique suite of software packages is tailored to the rail, building, maritime and aircraft environments.
The group have performed a number of evacuation experiments in rail environments in order to collect human performance data specific to rail environments. These experiments include evacuation to high and low platforms, intercar evacuation, evacuation to the Right-Of-Way, evacuation from partially and totally overturned rail cars.
The building related software is used for rail stations including the modelling of trains in stations, the rail software is specifically designed to simulate evacuation from rail rolling stock and possess rail specific human performance data. The development of the software was partially funded by the US Federal Railroad Administration through the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, within the Research and Innovative Technology Administration of the USDT. The software is specifically designed to cater for rail situations involving the evacuation from:
• rail car to rail car,
• rail car to platform,
• rail car to Right-Of-Way and
• evacuation from overturned rail cars.
The software will also cater for multi-level rail cars and will have a link to other unique software developed by the group allowing the inclusion of fire hazards such as heat, smoke and toxic gases. The software was recently used to simulate fire and evacuation from rail cars in tunnels.
The group has performed a series of evacuation experiments in the USA with the US Federal Rail Administration Volpe Laboratory to determine passenger walking speeds along a rail car aisle when the car has rolled over at different angles.
Coupled fire and evacuation simulation of a fire in a train within a tunnel is a project that has also been recently undertaken. The fire and the evacuation elements of the work are simulated using 2 different versions of the software. The train geometry is that of the new style Open Wide Gangway trains. Passengers are evacuating to the Right-Of-Way using the side door exits. It is also possible to show the spread of smoke within the rail cars.
